Advanced Piano

Bring the joy of music to your life while getting to know others in this advanced piano class for Middle School through Adult students. Every student will play on their own keyboard in a state-of-the-art Yamaha Piano Lab. This class is designed to meet the advanced piano student at their level of proficiency. (Five or more years of lessons are required and basic/intermediate piano skills must be accomplished.) Our experienced instructor will guide you with proper hand positioning, reading difficult music notation, understanding music theory, and building essential techniques. Please bring past piano music with you to class. In this supportive environment, everyone will have the opportunity to progress at their own pace and discover the joy of advancing their musical skills.

Classes will meet in the Stiefel Theatre Green Room. The last class on April 15 will be a recital on the Stiefel Stage.

Tuesdays, 5:00-5:50 PM, February 18 – April 15 (No Class March 18, Spring Break)

Age Range:

Middle School to Adult (with 5 years+ prior piano lessons)

Materials Required:

The Stiefel has 6 Yamaha keyboards for students to use in class. Each student will have their own keyboard with headphones. Access to a piano or keyboard is needed for at home practice.

Students will need to bring past piano music books to class. Suggestions for lesson books will be made after the instructor and student visit about their piano goals.

Course Objectives

Students will review all notes on the staff and will learn:

●Advanced Rhythms: Eighth notes, Sixteenth notes, and Triplets.

●Correct finger numbers for selected music

●Time Signatures (including common time as well as advanced time signatures)

●Key Signatures (both major and minor) and playing songs with multiple flats or sharps.

● Chords and Chord Structures
