Songwriting

Class Name:

Songwriting

Join Ann for a focus on writing songs with unforgettable lyrics. In Sessions 1 and 2, we analyze how songs are constructed by studying familiar songs, then we write our own versions. Sessions 3 and 4 will open up the possibilities to wholly original songs of our own making. We will finish just before the Smoky Hill River Festival, so we will have new ears to hear all the songs from those visiting performers.

Course Objectives

This four-session workshop will take students through the fundamentals of songwriting, focusing on lyric writing and matching lyrics with melody.

We will discuss and sing examples of beats, syllables, repetition, rhyme, the use of vivid language and adding new lyrics to familiar melodies. After those basics, we will do songwriting from prompts that allow students free range to write songs from scratch. We will have a piano available, and students can bring guitars or other instruments to use in the creative process.

Classes will meet in the Stiefel Theatre Watson Room
